With health being a devolved function, we work in close partnership with County Governments, private health facilities, community health workers, insurance companies and agencies as well as the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
We have two main health interventions for our partner communities;
a). Health insurance;
here we negotiate for highly discounted rates for the members in our partner communities, with NHIF and private insurance companies and agencies. We then proceed to empower the members to raise some amount towards the annual premiums and crowd fund the difference.
b). Stock in dispensaries;
through county government lobbying, we have started a program of having government/community dispensaries evenly distributed. With this we will be able to stock them with most used drugs and have the community access them at highly discounted rates.
While basic education (Primary and Secondary) is free courtesy of the government, quality education demands that parents put in a little more effort that complements what is being done by the government. Our focus on education is mainly in the Early Childhood Development & Education (ECDE) and post secondary education.
At ECDE level we work with County Government and other education stakeholders to provide the teachers with the best teaching aids, we equip the classes, we partner with the communities and parents to provide snacks for the children and also arrange for refresher teacher training. In select instances, we organize graduation ceremonies for children transitioning to primary school.
At post secondary level, we provide life skill training for form four leavers to prepare them for the life ahead, depending the path one chooses. Our main training areas have included;
a). Basic computer course
b). Public speaking and effective communication
c). Entrepreneurship skills
d). Agribusiness
According to government statistics, there are at least 2.8 million orphans and vulnerable children countrywide, with 47% being victims of HIV/AIDS. It is for the sad date of these children that we consider it our responsibility to do what we can to lessen their burdens.
Proper health care, education, nutrition and shelter are the main challenges these children face from day to day. And this is where we come in to provide solution based interventions that lift their status and provide a ray of hope, for their future if not the now.
Many of them within school going age are incorporated in our education programme, where we source for scholarships for them, crowd fund for their uniforms and other scholastic materials as well as negotiating groups medical insurance for them.
As in any other society, widows, widowers and the disabled within our partner communities equally face marginalization and alienation. Many times this is by error of omission from decision makers and influencers.
As such G&M Foundation has taken the advocacy role on behalf of these groups. We lobby relevant authorities for them and champion for their needs, interests and inabilities to be considered in every process.
We also provide specialized training for them to enable them establish themselves in the corporate or business fronts. These we do by incorporating them in our capacity building sessions.
These groups are also encouraged to from support groups through which they can influence decisions, policies and allocations. It is also in these groups that we empower to attain financial powers through intervention programs such as table banking and a revolving fund.
Livelihood Initiatives are high value, high return income generating projects that the communities we work with are encouraged and empowered to participate and invest in as an avenue to increase their purchasing power hence improve their standards of living. Projects to be commissioned in 2020 include but are not limited to;
Poultry farming
Horticulture farming
Green house farming
The foundation with support from partners invests in the communities where we work. This we do partly by building the capacity of individuals by supporting them to gain and or enhance particular skills useful for their livelihood.
Seminars, workshops and targeted trainings are held periodically in line with findings of a comprehensive needs analysis continuously carried out within the select community.
Key areas of capacity building include;
Agribusiness
Entrepreneurship skills
Basic ICT skills
Prudent financial management
